A Bicycle Makes a Huge Difference in Rural India
A Bicycle - The Great Equalizer
Education is the ticket out of poverty for kids in rural India. Unfortunately, many rural students are forced to drop out each year because of the long distances they have to travel to school each day.
A bike provides security on the road and helps kids get to school faster so they arrive with more energy to learn. What's more, a bike can actually help a student get better grades!
The long-term impact of a bike on a child’s life can be huge. A good education helps a child get a good paying job, which in turn lifts up the whole community. Literacy among girls is also statistically the most important factor in preventing childhood marriages.

How You Can Help
At this moment, 150 students in the Settur and Yemmiganur areas in Andhra Pradesh need bicycles to continue their high school education. On average, they have to walk over three miles to and from class every day on a dangerous open road that leaves them vulnerable to assault and harassment. With bicycles, they will be able to travel quickly and safely to school and arrive with enough energy to learn once they get there.

About VFF USA
The Vicente Ferrer Foundation USA (VFF USA) is a DC-based foundation devoted to empowering rural communities in the Southeast Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. We focus on improving the lives of India's most marginalized groups to build a more just and equitable society. We place particular emphasis on assisting the most vulnerable populations--children, women, and people with disabilities--to ensure that development in rural areas leaves no one behind. Through our local implementing partner, the Rural Development Trust (RDT), we develop holistic, long-term solutions that empower communities, improve living conditions and promote lasting positive change.
