One Tamarind Tree Can Transform Lives in Rural India

Did you know that just one tamarind tree can become a steady source of income for one family in rural India?

The tamarind, a tropical fruit also called the "Indian date," is an indispensable ingredient in the South Indian diet.

In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, tamarind cultivation is carried out in orchards, with 40 to 50 trees per acre. Since tamarind trees are deep-rooted, they do not require irrigation. However, to raise the seed-beds and transplantation, irrigation is required for the first four years.

Rural Development Trust, our implementing partner in India, launched tamarind plantation projects given their clear commercial benefits and suitability to the local climate. It is not only used widely in dietary preparation of souring, curries, sauces, chutney and certain beverages but also its seeds, tender leaves, flowers and young seedlings provide steady income to local farmers.

In fact, many farmers state that tamarind yields higher revenue than mango orchards.

Dry weather is very suitable for fully ripening the fruit at the time of harvest. Harvesting is usually done during January-March. The yield from one tree aged about 25 years will be about 100 kg at the first picking, 150 kg at the second, and 50 kg at the third picking -- all in one season.

Importantly, tamarind plants do not require much attention for their nourishment and development. However, sound farm management skills are required to achieve commercial success.
